Former Prisoners Tell Their Stories
Through drawings, text and intimate portraits, Mapping Memory represents a workshop and exhibition conducted with prisoners held at The Old Fort Prison during the apartheid years. Many prisoners had suppressed their prison memories due to the horror of their experiences, but when the bold decision to transform The Old Fort into the Constitutional Court of South Africa was made, it became imperative to preserve an archive of prisoner experience and 'give material form to memories made fragile by the passage of time'.
