Goldsmith Furniture Company
228 North Main Street, Old Town, Maine

" The building housing the Goldsmith Furniture Company was started in 1916 and completed in 1917, when the business was opened by David and Harry I. Goldsmith under the name, David Goldsmith and Son. The stock of second-hand and new furniture occupied about half the space of the building.

In 1920, the store’s name was changed to Goldsmith Furniture Company. Originally deliveries of furniture were made with a horse and wagon and, in winter, with a horse and sled; in 1920 the business first made use of a delivery truck.

In 1945, Joseph E. Goldsmith entered the business. In 1950 the store was completely remodeled, and the second-floor rooms, which had formerly served as living space for the family, were incorporated into the store.

Today the store, managed by Joseph E. Goldsmith, has eight employees, and two large furniture vans are used to deliver merchandise over a wide shopping area surrounding Old Town.

David Goldsmith, the father of the store’s founder, had operated a blacksmith shop in Old Town on a site which has now become the City Park.

Before opening the furniture store here, Harry I. Goldsmith worked in Bangor, shining shoes and selling newspapers. He still has the shoe shine brush which is over 60 years old. Later he worked in the pulp mill, alternating 13 hours by night one week and 11 hours by day the next, earning $** [print not legible] every two weeks. He also worked in the woolen mill.

Harry I. Goldsmith operated a candy store for four years where Kinkow’s tailor shop is now located, and for three years at a site now included in the First National Store. "
